THE MONTY BOSTON: STORMWATER RETENTION WITH A VIEW
Renovating buildings in Boston—especially in areas built on or near landfilled zones like the Back Bay—often comes with costly stormwater management requirements, such as installing underground tanks. In 2020, the owner of a Tremont Street property reached out to Recover to explore an alternative solution—a green roof. With a municipal credit incentive from the Boston Water and Sewer Commission*, this solution not only reduced costs and minimized disruption but also provided numerous environmental and aesthetic benefits.
Recover designers considered the size and depth of the garden, the appropriate planting mediums, plant selection, and decking materials. This green roof includes a guest-accessible roof deck framed by a native meadow and an integrated stormwater retention system that exceeds city requirements, supports pollinators, and enhances the guest experience.
Collaboration played a key role in bringing this project to life. Roofterra served as the owner’s representative and project manager at The Monty Boston, coordinating an experienced team to ensure every detail was executed to the highest standard. Meanwhile, Recover performed the installation and manages the ongoing maintenance.
The results speak for themselves. The Monty’s green roof is welcoming with an ever-changing floral palette, rich textures, and thriving pollinator activity, and stands as a prime example of form following function, combining practical stormwater management with vibrant, accessible green spaces. This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform rooftops into sustainable, beautiful, and functional urban landscapes.
