Our Mission

Recover Green Roofs is a design-build firm specializing in the design, installation, and maintenance of green roofs, including rooftop gardens, farms, and amenity spaces. Recover has designed and built residential, commercial, and institutional buildings across New England and beyond for over a decade, emphasizing the stacking benefits that a green roof provides to its community, local ecosystems, and the environment at large. We strive to create long-lasting, thriving green roofs that aid in recovering nature in our built environment in order to support healthier communities and more resilient cities.

Our Core Values

Quality

Our approach begins with our designers, builders, and horticulturists – their attention to detail ensures the quality construction and maintenance of our green roofs.

Safety

Safety is our number one priority on our rooftops, which means we design, build, and maintain with both the safety of our workers and our clients in mind.

Leadership

We are leaders on and off the job site – advocating for comprehensive nature-based green roof designs, stormwater management considerations, the use of sustainable building materials, and more.

Resiliency

We build green roofs because we believe that integrating natural landscapes back into our built environment is important for creating resilient cities and healthier communities.

Our Story

Two men standing on a rooftop in an urban area with tall glass buildings in the background. One man is wearing a yellow safety vest and glasses, and the other is in a brown jacket. Both are smiling.

While studying at St. Lawrence University in Upstate New York, co-founders Mark Winterer and Brendan Shea first met building giant sleds for the annual campus Snow Bowl Extravaganza. The two bonded over their love of nature and their interest in working with their hands and quickly became best friends and roommates. Seven years after graduating, Mark and Brendan teamed up to build green roofs—also known as “vegetated” or “living roofs”—and merging their shared interests into meaningful work through the founding of Recover Green Roofs.

Over twelve years later, Recover changed the rooftop landscape of Greater Boston and the Northeast. Recover roofs can be found on high rises, universities, and hospitals throughout the New England area, with our team tackling new projects and unique challenges every day. Led by Mark, owner and captain of the Recover ship, and a team of passionate, experienced green roof builders, designers, advocates, and experts, Recover is poised to bring the essential benefits of green roofs to more communities across New England and beyond.
