BALCONY GREEN ROOF

Neatly tucked on the 15th floor with views of Copley Square, this pair of mirrored green roofs proves that even the smallest spaces can make a big impact. Designed as extensive roofs with a maximum soil depth of just 6", they balance the building’s weight constraints with a surprisingly lush and diverse plant palette.

The northwest-facing, part-shade exposure supports a thriving mix of pollinator-friendly perennials, including monarda, columbine, yarrow, tiarella, and sedum. The layered textures and seasonal blooms not only create a visually engaging meadow but also attract a wide range of pollinators—multiple bee species and other beneficial insects have been documented here as a biodiversity site.

Highly visible from adjoining boardrooms and outdoor patio spaces, these green roofs offer employees daily views of nature, supporting wellness while reinforcing the client’s commitment to sustainability. Small but mighty, this project exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a modest footprint into a biodiverse, restorative landscape.
