Naturalistic Rooftop Garden for Pollinators and Produce
This garage rooftop garden project was designed by Recover to bring together biodiversity, beauty, and function. The client envisioned a pollinator-friendly meadow, created with a specialized seed mix to support seasonal interest and local ecosystems, alongside a dedicated vegetable gardening area she could plant and tend herself. A low-key patio, prepped for future seating, ties the space together, with creeping thyme interplanted between pavers to add texture, color, and fragrance.
From the start, it was important to avoid aggressive spreaders such as mint and vinca, ensuring the planting palette would remain intentional and manageable over time.
The design also addressed early concerns about making the space feel “occupied.” By integrating inspection-focused details such as recommended railing heights, a two-foot offset between raised beds and the railing, and completing all flagstone and garden installations upfront, we created a space that feels both safe and lived-in.
Water management was equally important. With a multi-zone irrigation system already in place at ground level, the client wanted full control of her rooftop zones through her existing Rain Bird system, allowing her to fine-tune water use across the property.
