RESIDENTIAL ROOFTOP GARDEN FOR POLLINATORS AND PRODUCE
This rooftop garden, installed above an existing garage, was jointly conceived by Recover and the client to bring together biodiversity, beauty, sustainability, and function. Based on the client's vision of a lush and ecologically rich garden retreat, Recover designed a pollinator-friendly meadow with a specialized plug mix to support local ecosystems alongside herb planters, a seasonal-interest blooming perennial area, and a dedicated vegetable garden area that the client could plant and tend themselves. A hardscaped area nestled within the garden provides an area for the homeowners to enjoy with creeping thyme interplanted between pavers to add texture, color, and fragrance.
In terms of sustainability, the green roof’s granular drainage buildup is a gold standard for system longevity and plant performance. It boasts a plastic-free assembly that mirrors soil horizons found in nature, demonstrating a time-tested biophilic green roof design approach commonly found in Europe over the past several decades. Water management was equally important for the client. Thoughtful irrigation design includes planter and mound drip irrigation as well as overhead spray to fully cover the array of plant types, including plug and container plantings. Adding a manual watering connection point gives the client water management control, allowing them to fine-tune water use across the roof as desired.
