THE MONTY BOSTON HOTEL: STORMWATER RETENTION WITH A VIEW
Renovating buildings in Boston—especially in areas built on or near landfilled zones like the Back Bay—often comes with costly stormwater management requirements. In 2020, the owner of a Tremont Street property reached out to Recover to explore an alternative solution. Instead of installing underground tanks, they opted for a green roof to manage stormwater runoff <BWSC Grant?>. This solution not only reduced costs and minimized disruption but also provided numerous environmental and aesthetic benefits.
Recover designers considered the size and depth of the garden, the appropriate planting mediums, plant selection, and even decking materials. At Monty Boston, a guest-accessible roof deck framed by a native meadow and an integrated stormwater retention system exceeded city requirements, supported pollinators, and enhanced the guest experience.
Collaboration played a key role in bringing these projects to life. Roofterra served as the owner’s representative and project manager at Monty Boston, coordinating an experienced team to ensure every detail was executed to the highest standard.
With ongoing maintenance, the results speak for themselves. The Monty’s green roof is welcoming with an ever-changing floral palette, rich textures, and thriving pollinator activity, and stands as a prime example of form following function, combining practical stormwater management with vibrant, accessible green spaces. This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform rooftops into sustainable, beautiful, and functional urban landscapes.
