RESILIENT BY DESIGN: COASTAL GREEN ROOF AT GIBSON POINT
Gibson Point, once a junkyard in Revere, MA, has been transformed into a 6-story multifamily development focused on wellness and sustainability. At the heart of the project is a 5,500 sq. ft. green roof, built and maintained by Recover Green Roofs, that exemplifies innovation in stormwater management and coastal resilience. Installed atop a Sika Sarnafil adhered roofing system by Boston Roofing, the steep-sloped green roof uses advanced ZinCo products, including georaster rows, shear curbs, and fiber mats to resist hurricane-force winds and prevent erosion. To further protect against wind scour, the team installed wind erosion disks and applied additional seeding to stabilize plantings during establishment.

Recover selected lightweight, water-retaining media to support drought-tolerant sedum mats and enhance performance on the sloped surface. The plant palette was expanded to include resilient native species such as Bouteloua curtipendula, Schizachyrium scoparium, and Penstemon digitalis, selected for their adaptability to coastal conditions and ecological value. Designed by Arrowstreet, the project also features a boardwalk to Gibson Park, rain gardens, and a vegetated shoreline—tying together urban living with environmental health. In partnership with Leahy Landscaping and Callahan Construction, Gibson Point is a model for regenerative, storm-ready design in coastal development.
