Emma Willard School – Chapel and Arts Wing Expansion
The Chapel and Arts Wing Expansion at Emma Willard School in Troy, NY, enhances the campus with modern, flexible learning spaces while advancing the school’s commitment to sustainability. A highlight of the project is the 13,000 sq. ft. fully accessible green roof. Using Hydrotech’s Litetop Lawn system, the roof slopes up from ground level, arches over the new Arts Wing, and connects to the chapel entrance. The system integrates seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, featuring layers of insulation, drainage aggregate, and locally sourced bluegrass sod to create a vibrant, living roofscape.
In addition to the extensive lawn, Recover installed 1,100 sq. ft. of intensive pollinator gardens with soil depths up to 14 inches to support biodiversity and ecological learning. Together, these green spaces reflect Emma Willard’s vision for a campus that blends environmental stewardship with innovative design—creating a built environment that serves students, community, and the planet.
