Coastal Green Roof

This coastal green roof project extends the natural beauty of the surrounding meadow into the architecture of the main house, seamlessly blending outdoor living with ecological design. Designed specifically for the challenges of the Rhode Island coastline, the roof integrates stormwater management, biodiversity, and visual continuity between ground-level and upper living spaces.

The plant palette is tailored to the coastal environment, connecting naturalistic and meadow-inspired design with low-maintenance, pollinator-friendly species. A resilient mix of ornamental grasses and fleshy succulents offers rich textures and seasonal interest. Species such as Woolly Thyme, Blue Glitter Sea Holly, Prairie Pussytoes, and Sea Lavender thrive in the mostly sunny, dry conditions—where one side faces the ocean and the other, the street. When Sedum montanum ssp. orientale struggled with salt spray, it was successfully replaced with Limonium latifolium for greater durability.

A gently curved stone path adds both beauty and function, enabling access for maintenance without damaging plantings. The roof remains visibly integrated from multiple vantage points, reinforcing the harmony between the natural landscape and the built environment.

This project demonstrates how resilient planting, thoughtful design, and functional beauty can create a coastal green roof that is both ecologically sound and deeply connected to its place.
