1. GREEN ROOFS
A green roof is a layer of vegetation grown into a system of engineered soil, drainage and root barriers layered on top of a waterproof membrane. While green roofs come in an infinite variety of shapes and sizes, they can be categorized into 3 main types: extensive, intensive and semi-intensive.
Extensive
Extensive green roofs are the most commonly built system. They are comprised of 6 inches or less of engineered soil and weigh around 10 to 35 lbs/f² fully saturated. These systems are the least expensive to build - usually around $10 to $20/f² - and require the least amount of maintenance. Extensive green roofs work on most roof applications whether on an expansive flat roof or a small sloped roof. Plant selection is generally limited to sedums and may or may not require an irrigation system.
Intensive
Intensive green roofs use 6 inches or more of engineered soil and can weigh anywhere from 50 to 300 lbs/ f² fully saturated. Intensive systems allow for much greater flexibility in design and plant selection but can cost anywhere from $25 to $200/f² and require more maintenance. Because of the greater soil depth and plant variety, intensive green roofs provide better storm water management, heat island mitigation, insulation and other benefits.
Semi-intensive
Semi-intensive green roofs combine the best features of extensive and intensive systems by taking advantage of increased structural support where available. This allows for more flexibility in plant selection and design than a simple extensive system. The weight and cost will vary depending on the design but will generally be somewhere in between extensive and intensive.
2. GREEN WALLS
A green wall is a vertical structure that supports vegetation and is usually located on the exterior sides of buildings or on interior walls. Green walls offer a variety of benefits including cooling, air filtration and especially beautification. There are two types of green walls: living walls and green facades.
Living walls
A living wall is made of plants rooted in a growing medium that is secured on the vertical wall of a structure. Living walls can cost up to $170/sf fully installed and require irrigation and routine maintenance. Living walls are installed fully grown and are custom grown per order. Please allow 3 months of growing time before installation.
Green facades
Green facades are grown using plants that are rooted in the ground or in planter boxes and climb up the sides of buildings, support cables or lattice structures. Green facades are less expensive, require less maintenance and last longer than living walls; however, they take years to grow depending on the height of the wall. Ivy leagues have made green facades famous.
3. PLANTER BOXES
Recover can provide planter boxes of all shapes and sizes, giving us the flexibility to green an area where a green roof or wall is not an option. Planter boxes work well on roofs and decks and offer some of the same benefits
