Intensive green roofs use 6 inches or more of engineered soil and can weigh anywhere from 25 to 300+ lbs / ft² fully saturated. Intensive systems allow for much greater flexibility in design and plant selection but can cost anywhere from $25 to $200 / ft² and require more maintenance. Because of the greater soil depth and plant variety, intensive green roofs provide better storm water management, heat island mitigation, insulation and other benefits.
