DESIGN-BUILD BY RECOVER
Recover worked with homeowners to design and build a green roof that complements the surrounding landscape while maximizing the minimal square footage of this renovated garage in Brookline, MA. To maximize the growing potential of the roof, the design uses soil grading to create mounds that steadily increase soil depths from 3.5 to 12 inches.

Recover installed the entire green roof system above the waterproof membrane using a ZinCo green roof build-up. Pea stone aggregate over drainboard minimizes water retention for this low-weight system while a below-grade drip irrigation system reduces the watering needs of the planted perennials, groundcover, grasses, edible crops, and herbs. A custom-built ipe ship’s ladder, handcrafted by our own woodworker, and bluestone pavers allow owners to access the roof in order to harvest mint, basil, peppers, kale, strawberries and more. The carport roof is visually accessible from the client’s living room and bedroom windows, as well as from their front porch and driveway.

“We’re in the midst of our first full season and have enjoyed harvesting produce, maintaining the garden and simply seeing it every day as we pull into our driveway and look down from the windows of our home. “
